Fairfax resident travels to Athens to help refugees

Mary Beth Leland of Fairfax, CA was disturbed by the onslaught of images in the media of refugees crossing the Aegean Sea from Turkey, fleeing the Syrian Civil War. Thousands of refugees were arriving every week onto a tiny island, and thousands were also freezing in the mountains as they fled Syria and drowning in the Sea as they tried to reach Europe.

Taking action, she raised over $10,000 and spent the summer in Athens, where she learned the complications of both the crisis in Syria as well as the European response.
